December 10, 2023 - What should you do if there is an earthquake while you're diving your rental car in Maui? Is earthquake risk in Maui even something you should worry about?
In the last 50 years, going back to December 1973, Maui has had barely more than a handful of quakes surpassing magnitude 3.0. The strongest quake that was centered on the island was a 4.5 back in 1979, with a few that were slightly stronger centered off-shore. For the same 50 year period, Big Island had hundreds of quakes, with the strongest reaching a violent magnitude of 7.7, in 1975. By comparison, Maui seems relatively safe. Source: earthquake.usgs.gov
Tips for what to do if you're caught in an earthquake while you're driving your Maui rental car - or any car, anywhere - courtesy of USGS.gov:
If you are DRIVING -- stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving, watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.
