STARTING AT: $750/month. Many of the cars in our Maui car rental fleet are available for long-term rental. The longer you rent, the longer you save. The $750/month rate is for an older, smaller car, based on a three-month rental. Rates may vary with the type of car, the duration of rental, and seasonal factors for high season. The lowest rates are for cars with cosmetic blemishes that do not affect the running of the car. All our Maui rental cars are well-maintained, in excellent running condition, with good tires, good brakes, cold a/c, automatic transmission, radio/cd player.

WHY CONSIDER A LONG TERM RENTAL

What Is a Long Term Rental. We have low discount rates for every Maui car rental of any duration, but we reserve our cheapest rates for rentals of three months or longer. For this duration, it may not be clear a priori for many people whether to go with a rental, or consider other options, like shipping your car from the US Mainland to Maui, or buying a car for the duration of your stay in Maui.

Shipping your car. The rate for shipping your car from a West Coast US port to the port of Kahului in Maui is between $1,200-$1,500 each way, depending on fuel surcharges your choice of carrier, and other variable costs. In addition, there are substantial costs for transporting the car from a inland US location - like Kansas, for example - all the way to a West Coast port. All in all it could cost you upwards of $3,000 to ship your car to Maui and back. The shipping time from pickup to delivery can be three to four weeks; during this time you may have to rent a car to get around, adding to the cost of this option. Shipping your car becomes an economically viable option compared to a Maui car rental only if you're moving to Maui permanently - or semi-permanently at least.

Buying a car. The cost of used cars has sky-rocketed in recent years. This has happened everywhere, but the increase has been even more marked in Maui which is an isolated island with a limited supply of cars and no easy convenient way to bring used cars to market from elsewhere. A reasonable expectation for the cost of a used car in Maui is $5,000 for a 12-15 year old economy car in marginal running condition with deferred maintenance issues - it may need new tires, new brakes, new hoses and belts, and many other items that affect its safety and reliability. For less than that, the car you would be buying is on borrowed time and in fact non-running cars routinely sell for more than $2,000-$3,000 to buyers who are able to put new engines or new transmissions in them and restore them to running condition. The option of buying a car in situ is not suggested unless you have strong mechanical expertise, are able to identify issues with a potential purchase, and you are able to correct the issues yourself if needed. And forget about taking the car to a mechanic, every mechanic shop in Maui is booked for weeks in advance.

Also, selling the car when you leave is not an easy pain-free proposition. Unless you have a highly desirable car that you are willing to sell at a big discount to market value, it can take weeks to sell a car and even then you may have to take a huge haircut when you do - a loss that will take a big bite out of any advantage you were looking to gain in buying a car rather than renting.

But the cost seems high compared to a lease! Aren't lease payments only a few hundred dollars a month? It may be true that rental payments can seem higher than lease payments, but keep in mind that a lease is written for a duration of three years or longer usually, and you are on the hook for the entire amount of the lease. And keep in mind that in the current interest rate climate, lease payments have gone through the roof too! Today's rates for a car lease are higher than you might be thinking.
